You know the grind. You’re doing the work. You’re showing up. You’re checking all the boxes. But quarter after quarter, year after year, you aren't moving forward and those opportunities that you thought would materialize seem even further away. If you’re feeling stuck in your career, welcome to the club no one asked to join but almost everyone ends up in at some point. Stagnation is one of those things that sneaks up on even the smartest, most driven people. Sometimes being stuck feels like coasting. Like it is a little too easy. And remember, if you're not growing, you are going down hill. One day you realize that your big aspriations aren't there anymore, and the next you’re wondering if anyone even remembers you work here.
Good news: you’re not alone. Better news: you can fix it. It's time to jump in the saddle and get your career back up to full speed!
You might not be stuck in a burning dumpster fire of a job, but that is actually a different problem entirely. Rather than Monday Dread, its more like Monday Blah. When you aren't excited about the work you're doing and even a little scared of the challenges in front of you, then it probably means you're coasting. Look out for these signs:
- You haven’t learned anything new in months (unless you count Excel hacks from TikTok)
- You’re not being considered for new opportunities
- Your calendar is full, but your motivation is empty
- You’re quietly quitting in your head, even if your Slack status says “available”
Career stagnation isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s just... a lack of the purpose and meaning that good work can bring to our lives.
Here’s where we stop sugarcoating it and start giving you the lima beans of truth (nutritious and hard to swallow). If you're not growing, one (or more) of these culprits might be to blame:
You’re working hard, but toward what? Every week you crank out work, you maybe even get the recognition as the team workhorse. But you aren't moving the ball forward. You are just playing a part in other people's agendas. Vague goals like “I want to grow” aren’t goals — they’re wishes.
You’re great at your current job. Congrats! But are you ready for the next one? Maybe you've heard that old saying "Dress for the job you want, not the job you have." That is true for your skillsets too. If you're not building new skills, you might be building a wall between you and your future roles.
Managers are not mind readers. If you haven’t explicitly said, “I want to grow here,” then they’re assuming you're fine where you are. A business needs team members that can reliably do a job over time, so keeping you in your present position may even be a part of the management strategy. But you need to set growth goals that meet your career interests, as well as the company's priorities. Make those two things align and your career will will start jumping up rungs on the ladder.
Comfort is a career killer. Growth almost always comes with a little risk (and maybe some awkward conversations). Remember the mantra of doing hard things. If you are delivering on your current expectations with ease, you can likely handle more responsibility and tackle bigger challenges. You have more to give! That is a great thing. The world needs courageous people that are ready to push themselves to do more. You are one of those people. The world needs you.
Sometimes the structure you’re in literally doesn’t allow for advancement. No amount of extra effort will open a closed system. This can seem like a bummer, but it is only a problem if you can't acknowledge your situation. Once you realize that growth means flying the nest, then your opportunities become nearly infinite. Face the facts and plan your flight.
Okay, so now what? Here’s how you stop spinning in circles:
Ask yourself:
- What do I want, really?
- What am I avoiding? What am I afraid of?
- Where am I coasting?
This isn’t about beating yourself up — it’s about getting clear and being honest with yourself.
You need to actually write down what you want to achieve and when you want to achieve it. It should be ambitious but realistic. Write it on a piece of paper and read that piece of paper every night before bed and every morning when you wake up.
Don’t just show up in random webinars to feel productive. Build a development roadmap. Learn skills that map to your next move. Be strategic.
Talk to your manager. Be direct: “I’m looking for growth opportunities. What would it take to move to the next level?” Yes, it’s awkward. Do it anyway. Its time to do the hard things.
Look for projects that make you uncomfortable. Volunteer. Say yes to things that scare you just enough. Find consulting or freelance projects to build confidence and experience.
You know who helps people grow? Other people. Peers. Mentors. That person you met once on a panel who said, "Let me know how I can help." Reach out to have some informal coffee conversations. In truth, most of us don't have a single mentor. We have communities of people that we trust that we connect with throughout our careers. You never know where one conversation could lead you.
Sometimes you audit, you plan, you stretch… and nothing changes. That’s a sign. If the environment won’t support your growth, it’s time to make a move. You’re not stuck because you failed. You’re stuck because you outgrew the space.
